Children's Dentistry

Children should first visit the dentist when around 3 years old even though they may not need anything done. The idea is to get them to know the family dentist and to find out that he or she is their friend and not someone to be afraid of. Children need their teeth to chew and smile.  Children will suffer pain if the teeth are allowed to decay; they will be unable to eat properly with consequent effects on their social behaviour. Children have social lives too! Their mouth aesthetics such as protruding, discoloured teeth, or bad breath can lead to teasing at school, which could effect the child's social and mental development.

The baby tooth dentition is also essential for maintaining the jaw spaces so that permanent teeth come into the correct occlusion and position. It is therefore essential to keep the baby teeth for as long as possible unless other factors dictate otherwise.

Orthodontics

This is the treatment of maxillo-facial abnormalities; or in laymen’s terms the treatment of missing, crooked, crowded, protruding teeth or otherwise non-normal jaw position. Each particular situation is termed a malocclusion and is an orthodontic problem in its own right. Most malocclusions are inherited, although some may be acquired. Acquired malocclusions can be caused by accidents, early or late loss of baby teeth, thumb or finger sucking for a prolonged period of time.

There is no age limit to start orthodontic treatment. Initially pretreatment records and a clinical examination are undertaken to use in making an accurate diagnosis. These include any relevant medical and dental history as well as plaster models of teeth, and x-rays of your mouth. Braces treat orthodontic problems; these can be both fixed and removable. These appliances gently move the teeth and bone until they are in a desirable position. Both types are well tolerated by children and adults alike.

The length of treatment depends on the type and severity of the malocclusion and varies from person to person. The average is from 18 months to 30 months for children and may be longer for adults. The time depends on the difficulty of the case and the co-operation of the patient. The bone density and the age of the patient are also a factor.

Conservative Dentistry

Teeth may be filled with a variety of restorations ranging from the conventional amalgam and composite restorations to porcelain based restorations. These may be built in-situ or custom made in the clinic’s own laboratory. Ozone treatment plays an important part in this treatment as it sterilizes the tooth prior to filling preventing further caries.
Ozone Treatment

Ozone treatment is a revolutionary pain free/drill free treatment that sterilizes the tooth to prevent tooth decay. The technology uses ozone therapy (O3) to sterilize the tooth prior to restoration. No anaesthetic is required and this treatment is completely pain free. After sterilization the tooth is sealed with fissure sealants or restored to its usual form with conventional or special restoration materials.

Ozone treatment has also been used to treat oral lesions such as ulcers, herpetic lesions and other common lesions whereby its therapeutic effects reduce symptoms and healing time. Ozone may also be used to sterilize root canals prior to filling during root canal therapy. This treatment is highly specialized but provides an excellent prognosis.

Ozone treatment may be used on all patients. It is of particular use with children, as it educates them and encourages them to look after their teeth and visit the dentist regularly.

1. Cleaning
When starting treatment, we recommend that you first clean the surface of the tooth thoroughly - using KaVo PROPHYflex.

2. Measurement
To check up on the success of the treatment, measure the affected tooth using KaVo DIAGNOdent. Choose a longer or shorter treatment of ozone on the basis of the levels measured.

3. Treatment
Depending on the findings, use KaVo HealOzone to apply a controlled dose of ozone to the diseased area. You can set the treatment time to between 10 and 40 seconds.

4. Remineralisation solution
Encourages immediate remineralisation of the tooth.

Restorative Dentistry

This precludes the replacement of missing teeth by crowns and bridges; but also refers to the restoration of the natural dentition, which has been damaged, decayed or lost. In most cases of damaged teeth, these can be reconstructed to their original form and anatomy by the construction of a crown or bridge. These restorations are fabricated in our lab in a material similar in colour and shape to natural teeth. These crowns and bridges are cemented onto teeth and are referred to as fixed restorations.

Another possibility to crowning of anterior teeth is Veneers. These are wafer thin shells of porcelain, which are bonded onto the front of natural teeth. These veneers correct discoloured, chipped, twisted or otherwise malformed teeth. Although rather thin in manufacture, on bonding these become an intrinsic part of the tooth and are strong and resilient to normal everyday wear and tear.

Conventional crowns, bridgework and veneers today form an intrinsic part of cosmetic dental work. Our on-site technicians play a big part in this as they help decide on aesthetic detail, matching up the work with the patient’s remaining dentition.

Implant Surgery

A dental implant is a titanium root that an implant specialist places into your jawbone. This will provide the anchor to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Titanium is an inert highly biocompatible metal, which has been proven to be effective at fusing with bone in a process known as Osseo integration.

Dental implants actually feel like your own teeth and if taken care of will last a lifetime. There are two types of implant systems but the best implants are those directly screwed into the bone (endosteal).

Dental implants are an ideal solution for people in good general and oral health.  Teeth are normally lost due to an injury, decay, periodontal disease, or for some other reason. Adequate bone is needed in your jaw to support the implant. Suitable candidates should have healthy gum tissues that are free of periodontal disease and are those patients who will follow a strict regimen of oral hygiene to prevent a condition known as peri-implantitis.

Implants are Osseo integrated into the jaw bone consequently there is no gum recession or bone loss that normally may happen in crown and bridgework. Unlike bridges implants do not place any pressure on or involve adjacent teeth.

Implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth, or all your teeth. They may also be used as anchors for loose fitting dentures. All implants interventions should however be followed up by regular periodic visits to monitor one’s oral health and to make sure that proper care is taken of these new teeth.

The latest in advanced computer-modelling techniques and CAT scan data allows us to place implants in the jawbone with previously impossible precision thereby ensuring optimal results both surgically and aesthetically. Nobel Biocare developed this system for implant planning and offers the NobelGuide, a CAD/CAM engineering template used by dentists to assure accurate placement. This system was incorporated into their Teeth In An Hour product, a hybrid solution for edentulous patients. For further information please visit  www.nobelbiocare.se

Oral Surgery

A variety of oral surgical treatments are available. These range from simple extractions to complex extractions, minor oral surgery for impacted wisdom teeth as well as periodontal surgery and apicectomies. All may be done under local anaesthetic, general anaesthetic or under sedation. General anaesthesia is performed at one of the private hospitals of your choice.

A vast range of products may be used during these procedures to improve healing and diminish post-operative pain and bone/gingival defects. Such products like artificial bone during bone augmentation (BIO-OSS) and resorbable bilayer membrane (BIO-GUIDE) help to reduce bone defects and improve tissue architecture for future prosthesis. This is of particular use in periodontal surgery for the treatment of periodontal disease.

Tooth Whitening

Most stains are caused by age, tobacco, coffee, or tea. Tooth-whitening options include a number of over-the-counter whitening systems and whitening toothpastes. Bleaching is effective in lightning most stains caused by age, tobacco, coffee, and tea. Other types of stains, such as those produced by tetracycline use or too much fluoride, respond to bleaching to a lessor degree.

Nite White Take Home Whitening Kit
Our Clinics uses the latest in professional whitening treatments. The Nite White Excel 3 ACP take-home treatment uses comfortable and inconspicuous custom fitted trays filled with peroxide gels that fit over ones teeth. These are kept in the mouth for an average of 6hrs daily for 4-7days. Please visit http://www.discusdental.com/products/whitening.php for further information.

About Whitening

Your smile is important. It's one of the first things you notice when you meet someone. A whiter, brighter smile is beautiful - it can help you feel better about yourself and make a memorable impression.

Your lifestyle and the aging process can stain and darken your teeth. Many things we do on a regular basis can contribute to stained teeth, such as drinking coffee, tea, cola and red wine or smoking.

Whitening can get your smile looking its best. You should look for a whitening procedure that is:

■Fast and convenient
■Long lasting
■Low sensitivity
■Proven to be safe and effective
■Performed by a Dental Professional

ZOOM 1-Hr laser tooth whitening
For the more conscious and who want to see immediate results, our clinic uses the latest high-tech option. This is a 1-hr tooth whitening system which involves a direct beam of white light on the teeth for 1hour. During this procedure the patient is kept in an incline position. Whitening is immediate and painless! The patient might be left with slightly sensitive teeth for the next couple of days but this can quickly be solved with fluoride gel use in the custom made trays. We recommend ZOOM patients take on the trays too as maintenance touch-ups. Please visit http://www.zoomnow.com/ for further information.

Veneering
There is a third way that can cover up discoloration by placing Veneers. These are porcelain laminates that are bonded onto teeth. These veneers can also be used to repair a damaged tooth or change the shape or size of your teeth. They are much stronger than bonding. They will not pick up stain like bonding does and will retain their luster, unlike bonding. Veneers usually last 4 or more years. This is a two-appointment procedure. The first appointment is the preparation phase. A small amount of enamel is removed off the front of the tooth and an impression is made. The impression is sent to the lab and the lab makes a front of the tooth, much like a false fingernail, out of porcelain. The dentist tries in, bonds, trims and polishes the veneers at the next appointment.
